Exfoliation is one of the most underused steps in men's grooming — and one of the most impactful. Done right, it clears away dead skin cells, unclogs pores, smooths rough texture, and gives your moisturizer a better surface to work on. Done wrong, it irritates and damages skin. Here's how to get it right.
What Is Exfoliation?
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Your skin naturally sheds these cells, but they don't always fall away cleanly — they build up, clog pores, dull your complexion, and cause bumps. Exfoliating speeds up that removal process.
Two Types of Exfoliation
- Physical exfoliation: Uses a scrub, brush, or cloth to physically buff away dead cells. Quick and satisfying, but can be too harsh if the particles are too large or jagged.
- Chemical exfoliation: Uses acids (like AHA or BHA) to dissolve dead skin cells without scrubbing. Gentler and more even — great for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
How Often Should Men Exfoliate?
Two to three times per week is ideal for most skin types. If you have sensitive skin, once a week is plenty. If you over-exfoliate, you'll notice redness, tightness, and increased sensitivity — that's your signal to pull back.
The Right Way to Exfoliate
- Start with a clean face. Always exfoliate after cleansing — never on dry or unwashed skin.
- Apply gently. Use light, circular motions. You're removing dead cells, not scrubbing a pan.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water — hot water can irritate freshly exfoliated skin.
- Follow with moisturizer immediately while skin is still slightly damp.
- Skip active shaving areas. Don't exfoliate immediately before or after shaving — it increases razor burn risk.
Exfoliation for Men Who Shave
If you shave regularly, you're already getting some physical exfoliation from the razor — so be careful not to overdo it. Exfoliate on days you don't shave, and always follow with a good moisturizer to keep the skin barrier intact.
